Calperum Connect: Ecology in Action

Ecology in Action is a 3-day, 2-night on-country educational retreat for high school students, which develops knowledge in areas including ecology, environment, conservation, landscape management and Indigenous culture. With a focus on hands-on activities, students participate in exercises including water quality monitoring, pitfall trapping, mammal and reptile surveys and cultural activities.

Led by Calperum Station ecologists and Aboriginal rangers, students also develop teamwork, analytical thinking, data collection and presentation skills while gaining an understanding of local Aboriginal culture.

Calperum Connect: Indigenous STEM

Calperum’s Indigenous STEM program is a 3-day on-country educational retreat for year 8-10 high school students with an Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander background. The program develops the STEM skills of participants through a range of hands-on ecological and cultural activities, lead by Calperum Station’s Education Ecologist and Aboriginal Rangers.

Activities include ecological monitoring, creating a pitfall trap, making a boomerang, preparing bush tucker and exploring cultural sites. As well as introducing students to a broad range of practical activities, the program encourages participants to consider STEM as a potential career path and defines pathways to further education and training, while connecting them with Indigenous mentors and learning more about local Indigenous culture.
